A few years ago I wrote a children’s book and wanted to illustrate it. I was pretty good at drawing things realistically. But how do you draw in a children's book style? How do you develop your own style? I searched for books on the topic and found “Illustrating Children’s Books: Creating Pictures for Publication”. Jerry and Gloria Jean, the two eldest Pinkneys, along with their son Brian and his wife Andrea Davis, are all well-known creators of children’s literature. Each author's biography reveals unique personality. Children’s Book Illustrators in the Golden Age of Illustration. Arthur Rackham, "Come, now a roundel and a fairy song," Act 2 Scene 2, A Midsummer Night's Dream, William Shakespeare, , pen-and-ink and watercolor drawing, 10 1/2 x 7" A common misconception is the idea that the Victorians invented childhood.

Of course, trends in both book publishing and visual art shifted considerably in the 20th century, and the practice of publishing visual representations alongside text in adult literature saw a major decline, and book illustration became increasingly associated with children’s literature and “low-brow” or popular writing (such as Classics Illustrated). Also available as part of our Illustrator's Bundle, this course was created to share the secrets of writers and illustrators who have learned from classic literature, fine art, current events, and pop culture, in order to write or illustrate their own contemporary children's books that engage editors, art directors, and agents.
